Dunes and Lakeshore

Five days at Sleeping Bear with a Glen Arbor base camp and zero daily commute.

The fix for the classic Sleeping Bear mistake: staying in Traverse City and driving 45 minutes each way, every day. Basing at The Homestead in Glen Arbor puts the Dune Climb 15 minutes away and turns evenings into beach walks instead of car seats. Day 2 is the big one: Junior Ranger badges at the visitor center, the climb itself, and the Pierce Stocking overlooks 450 feet above Lake Michigan. Day 3 paddles the shallow, glass-clear Crystal River, Day 4 floats the Platte, and the drive home detours through Fishtown's shanties for smoked fish sandwiches. Plan $2,000 to $3,100 for a family of 4 across 5 days.

The $25 Sleeping Bear vehicle pass covers 7 days: the climb, the scenic drive, and every park beach on this itinerary ride on one purchase.

Staying in Traverse City instead of Glen Arbor cuts lodging roughly 30 percent, at the cost of 90 minutes of daily driving. This template spends the money and keeps the time.

Grocery-run picnics cover both river-day lunches; the Glen Arbor market handles sandwich supplies.

Five things we wish we'd known

Book rentals ahead

July kayaks and Platte River tubes sell out days in advance. Reserve Crystal River and Riverside Canoe when you book the room.

Dune timing

Climb before 11:00 or after 16:00 in July. Midday sand genuinely burns little feet; everyone carries shoes anyway.

Age honesty

The full dune hike to Lake Michigan is 3.5 hours round trip and not for under-10s. The climb-and-run-back version is the family move.

Junior Ranger first

Grab booklets at the visitor center on Day 2 morning so the kids collect stamps all week and swear in before checkout.

Pack doubles

Two swimsuits per kid. Between rivers, beaches, and the sand, nothing dries fast enough for one.

Make this your Traverse City trip in about 8 minutes.

Swap stops, change dates, add your own picks. Rosie keeps the rhythm intact.
