Dinosaurs, belugas, and a doughnut in an alley: the Chicago weekend kids retell for months.
This is the greatest-hits version of Chicago for kids roughly 3 to 12. Day 1 pairs the free Lincoln Park Zoo (Rosie Score 89) with Maggie Daley Park and a dancing-waiters dinner at Ed Debevic's. Day 2 runs the Museum Campus: Sue the T. rex at the Field Museum in the morning, belugas at Shedd after lunch, deep dish at Gino's East to finish. Day 3 gets everyone to the Children's Museum right at the 10:00 open before the pier stroll home. Budget $1,250 to $1,700 for a family of 4, less if you buy CityPASS.
A trip planned with you, not for you.

Chicago CityPASS ($144 adult, $114 child ages 3 to 11) covers Shedd, Skydeck, and 3 more picks including the Field Museum. It pays for itself on this itinerary if you add one more attraction.
The zoo and both parks are free, so the paid tickets concentrate on Day 2 and Day 3. Book Shedd timed entry ahead to skip the ticket line entirely.
Kids under 7 ride the CTA free with a fare-paying adult, and the Red Line covers most of this route.
Five things we wish we'd known
Shedd uses timed entry and summer Saturdays sell out. Book the 12:30 to 1:00 window when you book the hotel.
Day 2 covers 3+ miles on foot. Even kids who normally walk will want wheels by the aquarium.
The Children's Museum is closed Tuesdays and opens at 10:00. This itinerary puts it on Sunday when it runs to 5:00.
Deep dish takes 45 minutes in the oven. Order the pizza before drinks arrive, always.
The lakefront runs 10 degrees colder than the Loop in spring. Pack one more layer than the forecast suggests.
Make this your Chicago trip in about 8 minutes.
Swap stops, change dates, add your own picks. Rosie keeps the rhythm intact.
