Peak color from a 60-foot tower, apples off the tree, and a ferry across Death's Door.
Early October is Door County's quiet-brag season: peak color usually lands the first two weeks, apples are on at Lautenbach's, and the summer crowds are gone everywhere except festival weekends. This trip bases in Sister Bay at a lodge with an indoor pool, crosses to Washington Island on the car ferry ($78 round trip for a family of 4 with the car), and catches the goats on Al Johnson's roof before they come down for the season in mid-October. Best for ages 4 to 12 and grandparent trips.
A trip planned with you, not for you.

Each day, told as a story
One big adventure day sandwiched by two easy ones: the island crossing is the centerpiece, and everything else stays within 30 minutes of the hotel.
Apple picking, one tower, and a fish boil, all short walks.
Ferry over at 9, three island stops, boat back by 2:40, pool to recover.
Pancake breakfast, boardwalks, a train-delivered lunch, waves, and home.

Skip the car on the ferry and ride the Cherry Train instead: the ferry-plus-tram combo is $41 per adult and $18 per kid 6 to 11, and the narrated 2-hour loop hits the same three island stops.
Kids under 18 walk The Ridges free, kids under 6 ride the ferry free, and Cave Point and Schoolhouse Beach cost nothing. The only per-person tickets on this trip are the fish boil and the boat.
Travel Sunday to Tuesday instead of a weekend and fall lodging drops toward the $130 end, except the second and third October weekends (Pumpkin Patch and Fall Fest), which price like July.
Five things we wish we'd known
Hourly ferry service and the Cherry Train both end mid-October, and many businesses close right after. The first two weeks of October are the sweet spot for color plus full operations.
White Gull fish boil seatings are 5:00, 6:30, and 8:00 (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday in early fall); call 920-868-3517. The 5:00 seating fits kid bedtimes and the drive back to Sister Bay.
Early October runs roughly 54°F highs and low 40s by evening, and the ferry deck adds wind. Hats and a warm layer per kid make the island day work.
Egg Harbor Pumpkin Patch (second October weekend) and Sister Bay Fall Fest (third weekend, with the Ping Pong Ball Drop) are great and packed. Book lodging months ahead if you aim for one; avoid those weekends if you want quiet.
Island attractions are miles apart, so take the car across ($30 round trip) or ride the tram. Pocket a few dollar bills: several island stops ask a $1 to $2 cash donation. And leave Schoolhouse Beach stones on the beach; taking them is illegal.
Make this your Door County trip in about 8 minutes.
Swap stops, change dates, add your own picks. Rosie keeps the rhythm intact.
