Warm bay water, pick-your-own cherries, and a dinner that ends in a fireball.
This is the classic first Door County trip for families with kids 2 to 12, timed for mid-July when the tart cherries come in. You base in Ephraim at a resort with an indoor pool, walk to the beach and the fish boil, and spend days at the free stuff: 53 public beaches, a state park with a stroller-accessible tower, and a playground next to the custard stand. Total for a family of 4 lands around $850 to $1,500 including lodging.
A trip planned with you, not for you.
This is a read-only preview of Rosie's builder. Switch between list, map, and calendar to explore the trip. In your own, every stop is yours to move, swap, or rebuild.
Each day, told as a story
Beach-paced on purpose: one anchor activity per half day, a real nap before the late theater night, and nothing more than 30 minutes from the hotel.
Arrival, one tower walk, a long beach afternoon, and a walk-to dinner.
Orchard, beach, and a 9:30 pm theater night, cushioned by a built-in nap.
Big breakfast, booming waves, a train-delivered lunch, and goat kids on the way home.

Visiting state parks both days? The $28 Wisconsin resident annual sticker ($50 non-resident) beats paying $13 to $16 daily, and it covers every state park on the trip.
Every beach on this itinerary is free. Pack a picnic from the Seaquist bakery on day 2 and lunch drops to about $20 for the whole family.
Northern Sky kids under 3 are free, and child tickets start at $14. The Monday 5 pm show is the cheapest and earliest option if you shift the trip.
Five things we wish we'd known
Reserve the fish boil (Old Post Office, 920-854-4034) and Northern Sky tickets as soon as dates are set. Both sell out on July weekends, and lodging books about 6 months out.
Swim the Green Bay side. Nicolet, Ephraim, and Sister Bay run warm and shallow; Lake Michigan beaches sit around 65°F even in late July.
Pick-your-own runs roughly July 9 to August 1, Thursday to Saturday 10 to 4 at Seaquist. Outside the window, the market and playscape still deliver (open Monday to Saturday, May through October).
Eagle Tower's 850-foot canopy walk never exceeds a 5 percent grade, so strollers roll to the top. The Farm's gravel paths are stroller-workable; bring small bills for animal feed and milk bottles.
Northern Sky is dark Sundays and Seaquist is closed Sundays, so keep this itinerary's Friday-to-Sunday shape (theater and cherries land on Saturday).
