Sledding a golf course, skating for free, and a fish boil fireball in the January dark.
Door County in January is cold (average high 28°F), quiet, and cheaper than you think: winter hotel rates run $90 to $180 where summer charges $300. This trip leans on what reliably works for ages 4 to 12: a hotel with an indoor pool and kids' splash zone as the guaranteed win, free ice rinks and free loaner gear, sledding in a state park, and museums and a board game cafe for the coldest hours. It is anchored to a Friday arrival because the White Gull Inn boils fish only on Fridays in winter.
A trip planned with you, not for you.

Each day, told as a story
Winter pacing is honest pacing: one outdoor block per day between 10 and 4, an indoor anchor either side, and the hotel pool as the daily closer.
Indoor afternoon, splash zone, and one 35-minute drive to dinner.
Sledding, skiing, and skating with a pizza thaw in the middle.
Two short outdoor stops and a pub lunch before the drive home.

Five things we wish we'd known
Snow cover is not guaranteed; warm spells close the rinks and the sledding hill. That is why the base hotel has an indoor pool with a kids' splash zone, and the museum, game cafe, and candle bar carry any brown-snow day.
The White Gull Inn fish boil runs Fridays only in winter (seatings 5:00, 6:30, 8:00; adults $28.75, kids $13.50 to $17.25). Reserve at 920-868-3517 before booking anything else.
January sunset is about 4:34 pm. Stack outdoor activities from 10 to 4 and save museums, pools, and dinners for the dark hours.
Snow pants and boots for every kid, ice cleats for adults at Cave Point, and a swimsuit per person; the pool is the daily finale. Nor Door rents what you forgot (adult skis $25/day, youth $15, tubes $12).
Winter Door County runs on reduced schedules: the Maritime Museum closes at 4 in January, Hands On Art is weekends only, and small cafes shift hours. Call the day-of for anything critical.
