What it costs

A typical 3-day toddler trip for a family of 4

Estimated total

$1,650 - $2,200

ex. lodging · family of 4 · 3 days

Hotel (Embassy Suites Scottsdale, 3 nights, breakfast and evening reception included, free parking)

$750-$1,050

Attractions (zoo ~$125, Railroad Park ~$20, Butterfly Wonderland $92, DBG ~$65, Children's Museum $57-76, Hall of Flame ~$50)

$400-$480

Restaurants (3 free breakfasts, 1 kids-eat-free dinner)

$300-$380

Rental car + gas

$200-$260

Under-3s are free at the zoo (VERIFY), Butterfly Wonderland (under 2), the Desert Botanical Garden, the Railroad Park rides (with a paying adult), and under-1s at the Children's Museum, so a family with one toddler and one baby pays for two adults and one child almost everywhere.

Buy the Arizona Boardwalk bundle if you add OdySea to Butterfly Wonderland (up to 40 percent off), and take the Railroad Park's $12 all-day wristband only if your child will ride more than four times.

Free First Friday night at the Children's Museum (5 to 9 p.m.) and Community Day at the garden (second Tuesday, pay what you can) drop this trip under $1,500 if the calendar cooperates.

Five things we wish we'd known

Openings are the plan

Zoo at 9, Butterfly Wonderland at 9, Children's Museum at 9. Every anchor is done by 11:30, lunch is under 10 minutes away, and the nap starts by 12:45. Rest blocks are 105 minutes and are not optional.

Stroller notes

Everything on this plan is stroller flat. The zoo rents strollers ($12 single, $15 double, card only); Butterfly Wonderland and MIM lend them free; the Railroad Park and DBG are paved. Hole-in-the-Rock, if you add it, is a carry on the last steps.

Splash and shade

Swim diapers and a towel for the zoo's Leapin' Lagoon (season VERIFY) and the Railroad Park splash pad; hats everywhere. March mornings start in the 50s and reach the upper 70s by 3.

Days matter

Hall of Flame is closed Sunday and Monday, Cibo is closed Monday, Chompie's kids-eat-free is Tuesday, S'edav Va'aki is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tue-to-Thu pattern here honors all of them; shift it and check.

Rain backups

Musical Instrument Museum (20 minutes; 3 and under free) and OdySea (next door to Butterfly Wonderland) swap into any washed-out morning; both are indoors and stroller flat.

Make this your Phoenix trip in about 8 minutes.

Swap stops, change dates, add your own picks. Rosie keeps the rhythm intact.
