Festival rides, u-pick buckets, and a water park hotel: cherry season done properly.
Timed to National Cherry Festival week in early July, when Traverse City turns into the cherry capital it claims to be. Day 1 works the festival itself: the Open Space midway on the bay, tacos downtown, and the Great Lakes Children's Museum (Rosie Score 87). Day 2 drives out to King Orchards to fill u-pick buckets, hits a retro drive-in and a self-playing-instrument museum on the way back, and ends with Moomers ice cream, voted some of the best in the country. Great Wolf Lodge's indoor water park is the built-in rainy-day plan and the Day 3 morning. Plan $1,150 to $1,650 for a family of 4.
A trip planned with you, not for you.

Five things we wish we'd known
Festival week is the busiest week of the year up north. Book the lodge 3 to 4 months out and expect downtown traffic.
King Orchards is closed Sundays and closes at 4:00 Saturdays. This itinerary puts the orchard on Friday on purpose.
Sweet cherry u-pick usually peaks early to mid July, right on festival week. Call the orchard the week before to confirm picking is open.
Hit the Open Space midway before 11:00 when lines are short and the bay breeze still beats the heat.
Cherry juice does not come out of anything. Dark shirts for the orchard, swimsuits within reach the whole trip.
Make this your Traverse City trip in about 8 minutes.
Swap stops, change dates, add your own picks. Rosie keeps the rhythm intact.
