Farmers markets, smoked fish shanties, and one moose to kiss: eating Traverse City with kids.

The family version of a Traverse City food trip, which means the wine trail is out and the food kids will talk about is in. Day 1 works downtown: brunch at S2S, tacos at Mama Lu's, and the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, where a former asylum now holds bakeries and a mercantile. Day 2 loops Old Mission Peninsula for a bistro lunch with bay views, the lighthouse at the 45th parallel, and Moomers ice cream (Rosie Score 87) at the dairy farm that makes it. Day 3 opens at the Sara Hardy Farmers Market and lands in Fishtown for smoked whitefish off the boats. Plan $1,450 to $2,150 for a family of 4.

The market breakfast on Saturday feeds four for about $25 and doubles as the morning activity.

Fishtown, the Commons, Front Street, and the lighthouse beach are all free; the food budget is the only real spend most days.

Carlson's fish spread and market produce make a hotel-room dinner for the night nobody wants a restaurant.

Five things we wish we'd known

Market days

Sara Hardy runs Wednesday and Saturday mornings, June through October. This itinerary anchors Saturday to it; do not shift Day 3.

Sunday closures

Slabtown and Grand Traverse Pie close Sundays, and Old Mission General Store opens at noon. The Sunday plan here routes around all three.

Peninsula pacing

The Old Mission loop is 40 miles of two-lane road. The bistro lunch reservation at Chateau Chantal keeps the day from drifting.

One-bite rule

Smoked whitefish, cherry salsa, chevre from the market: the trip works best with a family one-bite-try rule declared on Day 1.

Beach within reach

The hotel sits on the bay. Keep swimsuits accessible; the best foodie-trip valve is 30 unplanned minutes of beach.

Make this your Traverse City trip in about 8 minutes.

Swap stops, change dates, add your own picks. Rosie keeps the rhythm intact.
