Ten holiday trips ranked for the eye-roll years, with verified 2026 dates, honest cost bands, and the hook at each stop that beats a phone.

WHY THIS LIST

Ranked by what a 15-year-old will actually do

New York is the number one Christmas trip for teenagers, and it is not close. The rest of this ranking is where the honest arguing happens. We ranked all ten on teen fit first: real independence, things to do after dark, and programming that does not assume anyone still believes in Santa. Cost came second, shown as bands for a family of four across three nights before flights: $ is under $1,500, $$ is $1,500 to $3,000, $$$ is over $3,000. Every date below was checked against official sources in August 2026.

If your kids are still in the Santa window, start with our ranking of Christmas towns for families instead. This list is for the years when the eye-roll arrives before the suitcase is packed.

The one December trip most teens would plan for themselves.

The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City opens November 4, 2026 and runs 230 performances, the most in the show's history, so even a Christmas-week visit can usually find seats. The Rink at Bryant Park keeps admission free all season (skate rentals ran $19 to $60 in the 2025-26 season), and the Winter Village stalls around it are the rare holiday market a 15-year-old will walk without complaint.

Best for: ages 14-18. The real gift is independence: set up tap-to-pay for the subway, agree on a meeting spot, and let them take two stops on their own. Budget hard for the room; Midtown in December is the priciest hotel week of the year.

Hogwarts with snow effects beats almost anything else a theme park runs for this age band.

Universal's holiday season runs November 14, 2026 through January 3, 2027 across all three parks. Christmas in The Wizarding World brings the castle light show and Hogsmeade snow, Grinchmas stages live shows in Seuss Landing, and 2026 is Epic Universe's first holiday season, with decorated versions of Super Nintendo World and the How to Train Your Dragon land.

Best for: ages 12-17. Buy park-to-park tickets if the Hogwarts Express matters; the train needs access to both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Aim for weekdays before December 18 to dodge the worst of the Christmas-week crowds.

A teen who learns to snowboard on this trip will ask to come back every winter.

Ski school is the play here: three days of snowboard lessons turns a skeptical 14-year-old into a convert. Time the trip to December 5, 2026 and you get the Lighting of Breckenridge and the Race of the Santas in one night; watching costs nothing, and running in the Santa suit is $10 for kids 10-17 and $30 for adults.

Best for: ages 13-18. The free BreckConnect gondola runs from downtown to the base area, so teens can head up for a few runs without a parent shuttle. Book lodging early; Christmas week in Summit County sells out by fall.

Chicago, IL

New York energy at Midwest drive distance and half the hotel bill.

Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza is free to enter, opens the week before Thanksgiving, and the cocoa in the collectible boot mug is the thing every teen carries for the rest of the trip. The skating ribbon at Maggie Daley Park curves a quarter mile through the park; sessions with skates ran $17 to $23 in the 2025-26 season, and the 2026-27 season opens in November.

Best for: ages 13-18. Add a thrift run through Wicker Park and a deep-dish stop and you have a big-city Christmas within a 3 to 4 hour drive of most of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana.

New Orleans, LA

The holiday trip that never once feels aimed at children.

Celebration in the Oaks fills City Park from November 27 through January 1, and both the driving and walking routes work for a family that has aged out of Santa lines. On Christmas Eve, the levee bonfires upriver around Gramercy and Lutcher burn at dusk, free to watch, about 45 minutes from downtown.

Best for: ages 15-18. Older teens get the most out of the food, the street music, and a late beignet run in the Quarter. December is shoulder season here, so hotel rates land well below spring festival prices.

Gatlinburg, TN

Zip lines and night tubing carry the trip; the lights are the backdrop.

Winter Magic keeps millions of lights on from November 5 to February 15, the longest run of any place on this list. Anakeesta's mountaintop park charges teens the adult rate ($39.99 advance, ages 12 and up) for the chairlift, zip lines, and treetop walk, and Ober Mountain runs Cosmic Snow Tubing sessions at night under colored lights.

Best for: ages 12-16. Gatlinburg also holds a spot on our Christmas towns ranking; this is the teen version of that trip, heavier on adrenaline and lighter on Santa. Book a cabin with a game room; that one amenity buys you two quiet evenings.

Trading snow for a December surf lesson is an easier sell than you think.

Balboa Park December Nights runs December 4 and 5, 2026, free, and it is the city's biggest festival of the year. The rest of the week is the actual draw: afternoons around 65 degrees, surf schools teaching all winter with wetsuits included, and boardwalks where a 16-year-old can disappear for an hour and come back happy.

Best for: ages 13-18. Downtown is a 10-minute drive from San Diego International. December is shoulder season, so oceanfront rooms cost far less than they do in July.

Washington, DC

The rare big city where the best things for teens cost nothing.

Every Smithsonian museum is free, so a teen who burns through Air and Space in 40 minutes has cost you nothing. The ice rink in the National Gallery's Sculpture Garden ran $15 for ages 13 and up plus $7 skate rental in the 2025-26 season, with the skating loop set among the sculptures.

Best for: ages 13-17. The International Spy Museum is the paid ticket worth adding; it plays like a game instead of an exhibit. Ride Metro rather than driving, because holiday-season parking downtown is the worst part of the trip.

St. Augustine, FL

Three million lights, zero tickets, and ghost tours after dark.

Nights of Lights runs November 21, 2026 through January 18, 2027: more than three million white lights across the old city, free, no ticket required. After dark is when the trip earns its teen rating, because the ghost tours work the same lit-up streets and the historic district is compact enough to cover on foot in one evening.

Best for: ages 12-16. The season stretches to mid-January, so a trip after New Year's gets the same lights with thinner crowds and cheaper rooms.

Mall of America, MN

An indoor theme park in December is a better idea than it sounds.

Nickelodeon Universe's unlimited ride wristband runs $52.49 as of August 2026, covering the full ride lineup including full-size coasters, all indoors, no coat required. The mall around it is its own teen event: hand over a budget, set a meeting time, and the afternoon plans itself.

Best for: ages 12-15. The light rail stops at the door 12 minutes from MSP airport, making this the lowest-logistics trip on the list, and December weather cannot touch any of it.
