Why families love Orlando
Most Orlando guides start at a turnstile. This one starts at a spring. Within an hour of the resort corridor there are two swimmable springs at $5 and $6 a car (Kelly Park's Rock Springs run and Wekiwa Springs), a manatee refuge on the St. Johns River (Blue Spring, $6), and a downtown lake with a $15 swan boat and two playgrounds that cost nothing. Add Gatorland at $34.99 and $24.99, the Science Center, Crayola Experience, and a small zoo with a splash ground in Sanford, and you have a week of days a 4-year-old and a 10-year-old will both talk about, none of them over $125 for a family of four.
The Space Coast is the day trip: Kennedy Space Center is about 70 minutes east and $77 and $67 gets you the bus tour and the indoor Planet Play area, and Cocoa Beach's Lori Wilson Park is a free beach with a playground, showers, and a boardwalk 35 minutes from the gate. Rock shrimp in Titusville and a sunset dinner on the sand are the meals worth planning around.
What changed in 2026 matters for planning: Wekiwa Springs and Blue Spring both require day-use reservations (Blue Spring for every visitor since July 15, 2026), Kelly Park went to a flat $5 per vehicle in August, Leu Gardens' free days are the first Monday of the month, and The Wheel at ICON Park is now The Orlando Eye and was closed for maintenance with no reopening date as of August 2026. Stay in Lake Buena Vista or on Sand Lake Road for the free-breakfast hotels, or in Winter Park if you want the walkable version of the trip.

Is Orlando worth visiting with kids if you are not going to Disney?

How many days do you need in Orlando without theme parks?

What does Gatorland cost?
$34.99 for ages 13 and up, $24.99 for ages 3 to 12, under 3 free, and $3 less per ticket online. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with free parking, and the Gator Gully splash park is included.
Can you do Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach in one day from Orlando?
Yes with an early start. Be at the gate at 9 a.m. (about 70 minutes from Lake Buena Vista), do the bus tour first, eat rock shrimp at Dixie Crossroads in Titusville, then drive 35 minutes to the free Lori Wilson Park beach for a swim and showers before dinner in Cocoa Beach.
