Sheboygan is what happens when a working lake town decides to be good at everything families actually do on vacation. The locals call it the Malibu of the Midwest, and they mean it: the city’s position jutting into Lake Michigan catches surfable waves in multiple wind directions, and on a windy afternoon your kids can watch real surfers paddle out from North Point while you hold the hot chocolate. It is also, by a 1970 court ruling, the Bratwurst Capital of the World. Order a double on a hard roll with brown mustard and onions and you have eaten the city’s official food.

The family case is stacked. Bookworm Gardens, a nonprofit garden that rebuilds children’s books as walk-through sets, earned a Rosie Score of 88, the highest of any venue in this guide. Two blocks apart downtown you get the Above and Beyond Children’s Museum ($10, three floors, sweet spot ages 1 to 8) and the free John Michael Kohler Arts Center with its drop-in art studio. Ten minutes south, Kohler-Andrae State Park delivers dunes, a nature center, and 137 campsites. And the village of Kohler next door runs the golf resort where the 2021 Ryder Cup was played, with a par-3 course, The Baths, that genuinely works for grandparents, parents, and a 6-year-old on the same green.

Timing matters more here than most places. Lake Michigan is cold: realistic swimming runs mid-July through late August, when nearshore water finally hits about 70°F. June is a wading month. The compensation is that winter works anyway, because Breaker Bay’s indoor waterpark and the free Making Spirits Bright drive-through light show (1.1 million lights in Evergreen Park, late November through New Year’s Eve) give the cold months their own itinerary. Book state park campsites at the 11-month window for summer weekends, and book nothing at all for a rainy Tuesday: the museum, the library, and the arts center will carry the day.
